my roomie when I lived in pittsburgh was josh the teenage misogynist. his mother was, I suspect, a partial cause of said misogyny.

said mother had a boyfriend 20 years her junior who was a fairly hardcore lifestyle biker. he had the look: leather clothes, leather face, beard, bad attitude. he supported himself as a tow truck driver for triple-A and spent a ton of time on his bike.

my first christmas in pittsburgh, I opted to postpone visiting my family in order to stay in town and work. turning up for work on christmas day not only got me double-time pay, but also seemed like a good way to suck up to the boss.

josh-the-teenage-misogynist took pity on my plight and invited me to come spend christmas eve (and night) with his mom and wayne the biker at mom's house out in the 'burbs. we had a merry time all the way around and I was hearily sorry that my 6 AM start-time at work required me to sack out early at 11.

I had been given a sleeping bag on the couch in the living room and as I was drifting off, I was able to overhear the dulcet lullaby of joshTTM, mom and wayne chattering away in the kitchen. most of it was auditorily indistinguishable or eminently forgetable, but at one point the conversation turned to books. someone, joshTTM I believe, mentioned _zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance_. it was then that wayne burst forth with the following:

"yeah, I read that book. _zen and the art of the motorcycle maintenance_. huh. I'll tell ya. there's a lot of bullshit in that book, but it sure taught me a lot about how to fix a motorcyle."

noble truth indeed.

I had a dream the other night that Archer met Josh's kid ... is it a daughter? It was in the dream. Anyway, they got along pretty well and then Josh came raging over to our house wondering what evil I had done to his kid. The kids were playing in a sandbox in our back yard, just like two happy kids and then he just calmed down and we watched them play.
