seasonal suck and party invitation(s)
Oct. 23rd, 2003 01:14 pmhey, it's misery season here in seattle.
the desperate search for reasons to stay alive until may begins around now.
poor elliott smith apparently couldn't find very many. he stabbed himself in the chest and that's not funny. damn. what a heavy way to off oneself. I've personally always felt that drowning or jumping off something very tall would be the best option, but freakin' hari-kari...that's just hardcore. I just hope that poor elliott's shuffling off of the feral coil doesn't push sam coomes over the edge. he was looking so scraggly and miserable at quasi's bumbershoot show that I half-expected him to cap himself on stage as an encore. instead, he told the audience to fuck off and then ground his cock against his keyboard (hot organ on organ action! really pushing in all the stops!) for a ten minute meaningless noise exploration instead. I've seen him pull that kind of routine before, but only for a minute or so at a time and never with such rage and despair. the audience didn't care for this and, as much as I love the band, neither did I. I felt embarassed. I felt as if I'd brought my finacee home to meet my folks only to have dad get drunk and piss himself while mom baked a bundt cake.
ah, urine and bundt cake. they go together like a horse and a tablespoon full of rusted 16-penny nails.
anyway...I don't know how it is for the rest of seattle, but I'm digging out the saint johns wort and digging in for a long slow bummer of a half-year. thank god I have a lot to read...and that season 4 of babylon 5 and season 3 of queer as folk are due out on dvd soon. ow. too many numbers in that sentence.
and thank god for all the big social events coming up, which is why I initially started writing this post. so...social events:
--I'm having a birthday party this weekend. it's actually a joint three-way birthday party for me, elsner and
twocrows. we're operating under the assumption that if joints are fun, parties are fun, and three-ways are fun, that a joint, three-way party must be extremely amazingly fun. we shall see.
fossefox is going to be out of town for her birthday, so it's sort of going to be a wingding for her too. anyone out there in lj land who wants to attend or phone in their well (or ill) wishes for any of the three or four of us should drop me a note.
--I'm hosting thanksgiving dinner again, after taking a year off. I'll post a more thorough invitation in a week or two, but anyone who is going to be stuck in town for thanksgiving (or who feels like flying in) is more than welcome to attend. location TBA.
--I'm going to be in NYC on December 20 and in philadelphia on December 21. anyone who wants to meet up in either location for dinner, museuming, shopping and an evening of horrible depravity should get in touch. I'll be doing all of the above regardless, so don't fret about planning ahead if that's not your bag.
now back to your regularly scheduled silence.

Alas and alack
Date: 2003-10-23 02:13 pm (UTC)-Hm.
p.s. My Aunt Linda did the cover art for one of three or four versions of Genesis' first album.
Re: Alas and alack
Date: 2003-10-23 02:53 pm (UTC)thanks for the invite. I don't know when or if the work schedule will allow, but I'll keep it in mind.
see you on the 20th. What's the occasion?
well, I'm heading out that way to spend christmas with my family.
the stop in new york was because: 1. I haven't had a day/night out on the town in manhattan in
too long, 2. it's where jet blue departs and arrives; and 3. I was hoping to meet up with you!
My Aunt Linda did the cover art for one of three or four versions of Genesis' first album.
crazy! which one? I'm guessing the one released under the title "In the Beginning", since the other re-releases all features photos (I think).
Re: Alas and alack
Date: 2003-10-23 05:51 pm (UTC)Well, awesome enough -- it will be sweell to swee you again after these years innumerable.
As for that Genesis album, it's sort of a family legend. My Aunt Linda (whose maiden name was Broccoli) was an art student somewhere in Brooklyn when it happened. The story goes, one of her art professors really dug this painting she did, and one day, it was missing. Like, missing from the classroom, or from her locker or something. Later she was flipping through LPs in a record shop and found her artwork on the first Genesis album. She didn't get any credit, of course. Other relatives can testify to the veracity of this, but I've never seen the thing myself, so a question mark lingers in my mind.

Date: 2003-10-23 04:51 pm (UTC)Maybe we should have one big dinner in Philly and you can hold court for everyone in Philly who wants to see you. We can go to the Pope Room at Buca di whatever it was. Unless you want good food.

Date: 2003-10-24 01:28 pm (UTC)turns out K isn't leaving until a day or two after her b-day, but yeah...she's heading down to the corpus thing.
I would love...
Date: 2003-10-24 12:19 am (UTC)Congratulations on that.
And now, an A.E. Housman quote:
"When I was one-and-twenty,
I heard a wise man say,
'give pounds and crowns and rubles
but not your heart away,
give pearls away and diamonds,
but keep your love for free.'
But I was one-and-twenty,
no use to talk to me.
But now I'm twenty-two..."
