I think one of the essential qualities of Sweeney Todd is his non-scariness. I think the character should have a Lynchian fucked-upness-under-the-patina-of-the-completely ordinary, Everyman-esque kind of quality to it.
I disagree ... Len Cariou as Sweeney (original cast) had this brooding menace about him that scared the hell out of me, even when I pitied him.
He has had everything taken away from him (wife, child, occupation, freedom) and has become something inhuman, and that inhuman thing is vicious and dangerous, not just slightly creepy or adorably weird.
I actually don't like David Lynch movies. I saw Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, and Lost Highway, but none of them affected me enough to scare me. I hear that Twin Peaks is different/better, so I may see that some day.
