I just saw a yahoo headline that said "Dow skyrockets nearly 400 points amid economic optimism".

at first, I took it about as seriously as the UW Daily story today about the university gearing up to fight Voldemort.

then I realized it wasn't an april fools joke, and I still take it about that seriously.

economic WHAT?

I think what they mean by "economic optimism" is that the latest manufacturing numbers show that we're in a recession, but not as bad of a recession as all of the people who had been saying we're definitely not in a recession really thought we were.

If you're into half-glasses of water, you could say that the dow "skyrocketed" or you could say that it is "merely a market correction" and nothing for the short-sellers to be too pessimistic about.
